BMW expects 10% of total car sales to be EVs in India by next year

German luxury carmaker BMW expects electric vehicle sales to account for more than 10% of its total car sales in India by next year. In November last year, the company announced plans to launch three electric vehicles in six months in India. It has already launched its flagship all-electric iX SUV and all-electric MINI SE luxury sedan. “When we launched these two products, the iX and the Mini SE (electric), we see a rough demand of around 5%, which is really healthy…and with the launch of the i4, I think that by next year, electric demand would account for more than 10% of our volumes,” said BMW Group India President and CEO Vikram Pawah.

The BMW i4 is BMW’s latest electric vehicle and is their first purely electric model focused on driving dynamics. It is designed to be the ultimate electric driving machine combining sporting prowess with a range that also convinces for long journeys with comfort, space and practical appeal. The BMW i4 has been launched in India at an introductory price of Rs 69.90 lakh. Reservations for the latest BMW are open and can be made through the company’s official website. Deliveries of the i4, according to BMW, will commence in July 2022. The BMW i4 is being brought to India as a Completely Built Unit (CBU).

Available in the eDrive40 Sport version, the electric sedan will be available in Mineral White, Black Sapphire and Skyscraper Gray metallic paint options. Perforated Sensatec padding is available in Canberra Beige and Cognac color schemes.

BMW also offers the optional M aerodynamic kit with embellishments such as M aerodynamic bumpers, exclusive 18 or 19-inch M light aerodynamic alloy wheels and M elements in high-gloss black to reinforce the dynamic and sporty character.

The car comes with a standard warranty of two years for unlimited mileage. Repair Inclusive can extend the warranty benefits from the third year of operation to a maximum of the fifth year without any mileage limitation. The batteries are covered by a warranty valid for eight years or up to 1 60,000 kilometres.

BMW claims the i4 is the most aerodynamic electric vehicle in its class. Fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology comprises a highly integrated drive unit in a single housing that is powered by an electric motor, single-speed transmission and power electronics. The i4 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and develops 340 hp.

Making its debut, the extremely thin (110 mm) and high-voltage lithium-ion battery integrated into the floor has a capacity of 80.7 kWh offering a range of up to 590 km. The BMW i4 has the longest range than any other electric vehicle in India.

Regarding charging times:

– 205 kW DC charger: 10%-80% in 31 min / 164 km of additional autonomy in 10 min

– 50 kW DC charger: 10%-80% in 83 min / 100 km of additional autonomy in 18 min

– 11 kW AC charger: 0% to 100% in approximately 8.25 hours

As an introductory offer, the BMW i4 will come with a free BMW Wallbox charger with installation. It can be integrated into the home to enable safe and convenient charging up to 11 kW.

BMW Group India also said it aims to build one of the best charging networks in the luxury segment with fast chargers across the BMW dealership network in 34 cities across India.

Vikram Pawah, President of BMW Group India, said: “BMW Group today offers the largest and most diverse portfolio of electric cars for Indian customers.”
