A Palatine used car dealership is taking steps to relocate to downtown Lake County.
Autoland wants to move from 2240 Rand Road to a vacant building on the 800 block of North Lake Street in Mundelein. It’s at the northwest corner of Routes 45 and 176.
It would occupy an approximately 2-acre site that once housed Elite Motors but has been unused since Elite moved to Waukegan in 2018.
Mundelein Village Council asked administrators on Monday to draft an order that would create a special use permit for Autoland. The property is zoned for commercial uses, but automobile sales require special permission.
The ordinance to be drafted would also, if enacted, authorize Autoland to store vehicles outside and repair automobiles. Exterior storage and auto repairs are not permitted on the property at this time.
The ordinance should be ready for a vote on September 12.
Autoland expects to have 90 to 110 vehicles for sale at any one time. The minimum price for any vehicle would be $5,000.
This minimum price is one of 21 stipulations required by village officials as part of the proposed permit. Others relate to delivery times, test drive routes, hours of operation, lighting, and other aspects of the business.
A few residents asked about the plan during Monday’s meeting. They were particularly concerned about the village’s plan to require an 8-foot high fence around the property along Ridgeland Avenue, Laramie Street and Lyndale Street. This fence would serve as a buffer between the concessionaire and neighboring homes, and residents supported the idea.
The administrators also insisted on closure.
“I’ll hold your feet to the fire on the 8-foot fence,” administrator Kerston Russell told Autoland representatives. “I think it’s an important thing.”
