Quirk offers a new home for a car dealership on Quincy Avenue in Braintree.

BRAINTREE – The town planning council is considering a proposal to build a new car dealership in the former Fore River Dockyard.

Quirk Car Dealerships wants to build a sales and service building with 199 parking spaces on a 3½ acre section of the shipyard for Quirk Genesis.

The dealership now operates from temporary premises in the former Super Shine Car Wash at 411 Quincy Ave. Genesis is the luxury brand of Korean automaker Hyundai.

Frank Marinelli, an attorney for Quirk, said the 39-acre property at 575 Quincy Avenue is owned by Quirk and licensed to store up to 1,300 vehicles. The 26,480 square foot building would be near the storage area security office.

“It fits very well in this corner,” Marinelli said at the council’s public hearing on the proposal on Tuesday night.

He said the dealership building would have 15 service bays and represents a multi-million dollar investment from Quirk.

The paved area of the site would be reduced and landscaped, Marinelli said.

As for traffic, Marinelli said a study done for Quirk estimates the dealership would generate an additional car every two to three minutes and not cause a major change in traffic flow at a nearby intersection.

He said the plans meet all city requirements and auto dealerships are a permitted use in the area.

No one spoke out against the plans during the hearing. The board is expected to vote on the proposal at its next meeting on October 11.

The Genesis dealership is Quirk’s eighth dealership along Quincy Avenue, the same street where car dealership Daniel Quirk started his business with the purchase of the former Clark and Taber Chevrolet dealership in Weymouth Landing. This property is now the site of Landing 53 apartments.
